Jesús de Polanco

Jesús de Polanco is a very important businessman in Spain. He owns the Prisa group, a conglomerate which includes El País, the most important newspaper on the country; the radio channel Cadena Ser; the pay TV channel Canal Plus Spain and the digital TV platform Digital Plus, which has the monopoly of the digital TV on Spain. Also Prisa has got important interests on editing books and owns the Editorial Santillana.

Polanco's media are known for being clearly left-winged and for having helped the Socialist Party in its worst moments (when the Felipe González's government was accused of corruption and state terrorism). Left in Spain sees Prisa media like an example of plurality and progressim, while right-winged rivals in the media like El Mundo newspaper or COPE radio accused them to have the monopoly of spanish information and to disform reality for their own purposes.

In spite of this, when the conservative Popular Party were in the government, they didn't do any action against Polanco's media, even permeated Polanco to not perform a judicial sentence which didn't let Prisa to buy the Antena 3 radio channel.

Polanco's media finally took part on the media protest against Popular Party's management of the train bombs in Madrid which cost PP's candidate Mariano Rajoy the defeat in the 14 of March spanish elections and the victory of the José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero's PSOE.

Popular Party, who had never dared to speak clearly about what they think is a Polanco monopoly and manipulation of the media in Spain had recently begun to do that, when PSOE began to develop a license to permeat Canal Plus the opened emmission.

All of those controversial acts had radicalised the opinions about Polanco. On one hand, there are people who claims that El País and Cadena SER are the only media which are not under the domain of the right and in the other hand there are people that claims that Prisa media are a simple marketing vehicle for the PSOE, that exaggerate Polanco's influece on the PSOE and even that imply Polanco in a lot of conspiracy theories.
